Welcome back to our I Love Doodling blog series! Now that you’ve practiced drawing basic shapes, let’s take things a step further and see how combining these simple forms can unlock a whole new world of doodling possibilities. When you understand the foundations of shapes, you’ll find that creating fun, recognizable doodles is as easy as mixing and matching circles, triangles, rectangles, and lines!
In doodling, shapes are like puzzle pieces. By putting them together in different ways, you can quickly form objects, animals, and characters. This technique makes doodling accessible to everyone, even if you’re just starting. With a bit of imagination, you can turn a basic circle, square, or triangle into almost anything!
Here are a few examples of how combining basic shapes can create delightful doodles:
Circle + “L” Shape = Clock
Start with a circle and add an “L” shape inside it for the hour and minute hands. You’ve created a clock face in seconds! This simple combination brings time to life in your doodles and serves as a great addition to your scenes.
Circle + “T” Shape = Ladybug
Draw a circle, then add a “T” inside it. The crossbar of the “T” becomes wings, and the vertical line becomes a divider. A few dots on each side, and you’ve got an adorable ladybug!
Triangle + Half Circle = Boat
Place a triangle above a half circle, and voilà – you have a sailboat! The triangle is the sail, and the half circle is the boat’s hull. This simple design is perfect for any scene with water or whimsy.
Triangle + Rectangle = Tree
Use a triangle for the treetop and a rectangle for the trunk. This straightforward combination creates a classic tree shape, ideal for forest and nature scenes.
The magic of doodling is that you don’t need to be an expert artist – just someone who loves to play with shapes. By practicing these combinations, you’ll start to see how any object can be broken down into basic forms. This approach keeps doodling light-hearted, imaginative, and stress-free, letting you focus on the fun of creating.
Fill a page in your journal with combinations of shapes and see what new doodles you can make. Experiment with different combinations of circles, squares, and triangles, and don’t be afraid to add a few lines and dots. It’s all about playing with shapes and discovering what you can create from simple foundations.
The beauty of doodling lies in its simplicity. When you break things down into basic shapes and combine them, even the most complex designs become manageable. As you keep experimenting, you’ll find your doodles becoming more vibrant, playful, and fun. So grab your pen, let go of perfection, and start mixing those shapes. Your next doodle masterpiece awaits!
